Most of the country's consumers could carry out straightforward home improvements without resorting to professional help, it has been suggested, which may interest Roller Blinds owners.

According to Sue Beeson, spokeswoman for AA Home Rescue, electrical and gas work might have to be left in the hands of experts rather than general homeowners.

Regardless of this, she added: "Things like ... painting a child's bedroom, putting up a shelf - all those sorts of things are pretty basic things that with a little bit of skill, knowledge and care, most people would be able to do."

A sense of realism does need to be adopted by householders with regards to home improvements that are possible for them to actually handle themselves, Ms Beeson continued.

Energy efficiency home improvements are things which people could focus on to try and save money and help the environment, it was recently suggested by Gordon Miller, sustainability and communications director of Sustain Worldwide.
